  2. Chapter five starts off with certain violent events that led to the fall of monarchy in Afghan( Daoud Khan cousin to King Zahir Shah took over the country in the absence of the king). The chapter introduces us to Assef a bully in the neighborhood where Amir lives. Assef is described as a strong guy who idolizes Adolf Hitler and thinks that all the Hazaras should be wiped(Like how Hitler thought that all the Jews should be wiped out). This chapter has a lot of movie references so I would like to use a movie reference to describe Assef's character as Edward Norton in the movie American History X in which he too idolizes Hitler and is anti African-Americans,Jews,catholics and Asians. Towards the end of the chapter Baba is shown treating Hassan almost as his son by paying for a plastic surgery that would fix his upper lip and Amir gets jealous of Hassan because of this gesture by Baba. The ends with Hassan smiling at his new face and Amir explaining how that was ironical because that was the winter that Hassan stopped smiling.

The next chapter spends a lot of time explaining us how the kite flying tournament is played and what are its rules and how Amir got close to winning it once and Hassan being a very good at being a kite runner(people who run for the kite that was last cut and preserved it as a trophy). The chapter doesn't give us what it promised at the end of the chapter before this one(which is the day that changed Amir and the day Hassan stopped smiling). At the end of the chapter the author gives another example how much Hassan is loyal to Amir as he (may be) loses purposefully against Amir in a game of cards.

    Chapter 6

The sixth chapter of the book is mainly focused upon the major even of the year, which is the Kite Flying Tournament. The writer describes the event as one which is very awaited by all the people of the place.

Aamir, the narrator of the chapter starts out by describing the winter, and how beautiful the place looks when winter is out. Aamir tells the reader about his memory, the last time he saw Hassan run down a kite.
Hassan starts running in a blind direction and Aamir continues. They end up in a barren place near a school. During this time, Aamir is confused and asks Hassan how he knew that the kite was coming to this place, Hassan replies with his sense of loyalty, “would I ever lie to you Agha?” It is a noticeable thing that the loyalty of Hassan towards Aamir is always shown. In this chapter, Hassan agrees to eat dirt if Aamir asks him to.

After the memory of the kite runners, the writer diverts the topic towards Baba. He remembers as Baba tells him about the time when he had won a tournament and had cut 14 kites.
The night before the tournament, both the boys play cards and both them hope that the kite tournament would bring them happy memories and make Baba happy.

  5. CHAPTER 5

I understood that Amir is jealous of Hassan, “Later, I would tell myself I hadn’t felt envious of Hassan. Not at all.” Amir lacked the relation between him and Baba that Hassan shared with Ali. Another thing I could see from page 33, was how much Hassan trusted and relied of Amir. This most significant part of this chapter is when Amir and Hassan confront Assef and his friends. When Amir was afraid and did not know how to get rid of Assef. Hassan stands up for the both of them and threatens Assef with his slingshot- sparing them trouble.
Nothing else really caught my attention in this chapter except for Baba’s present to Hassan. Baba shows care and affection to Ali’s son. Just like Ali had been treated very well even though he was just a servant, Hassan too had a special place in Baba’s heart. My two questions for this chapter are: one, how does Baba show affection to Hassan than to Amir; and second, how much of a grudge will Assef keep?

  6. CHAPTER 6

This chapter tells a bit more about the relation between Baba and Amir. “ Baba and I lived in the same house, but in different spheres of existence. Kites were the one paper-thin slice of intersection between those spheres.” It is obvious that Amir and his father are not so open wit each other. I think that this chapter is significant because it talks about kite flying. I think that kite flying in this book is symbolic as a sign of freedom in Afghanistan. Also, the novel is titled Kite Runner. But my questions is how is this Hassan’s uncanny ability to run kites a symbol or tool used by Khaled Hosseini. I also noticed that Amir tries to feel superior to Hassan at any opportunity he gets-he wants to toy with Hassan. For example, “Suddenly I decided to toy with him a little. ‘I don’t know. Would you?”
There is also a part in this chapter,, which talks about how Hassan means everything he says, and sometimes what Amir says is forced-almost made up. Maybe the friendship was only half true. It is apparent that Hassan fully and completely loves Amir as a friend, but Amir on the other hand was kind of a phony. “That was the thing about Hassan. He was so goddamn pure, you always felt like a phony around him.” My other question for this chapter is, did Hassan ever realize Amir’s lack of love for him and did he ever wonder why?

  7. CHAPTER 5

We soon understand in this chapter, that Amir is jealous of Hassan and doesn’t have a good relationship with his father, and how much Hassan trusts Amir.
The crux of this chapter is when Assef ( the neighborhood bully) with two of his friends confronts Amir and Hassan, Amir, who is very scared and hoping for someone like Baba to come and help them, doesn’t know what to do, but Hassan, stands up to him by threatening to shoot him in the eye with his slingshot, this causes Assef and his friends to retreat but not before they swear revenge.
Later, when it’s Hassan’s birthday, Baba gives Hassan a gift (where he calls a highly qualified doctor to operate on his cleft lip), but it’s later mentioned that this was the winter where Hassan stopped smiling.

  8. CHAPTER 6

This chapter mainly talks about the Kite-Running, which is mentioned to be one of the most awaited event in Kabul.
Amir begins describing the winter and how beautiful it looks at that time, Amir recollects that he almost won a tournament in the past and that Hassan is very skilled in running down a kite, he runs in the opposite direction of where the kite is going and Amir questions him, Hassan simply asks “Would I ever lie to you, Agha?”, then soon the kite comes straight to Hassan’s hand while the other kids helplessly try to catch up.
It is mentioned that Baba won the competition by cutting down 14 kites wich is a record, and how Hassan and Amir play a game of cards the night before the competition and Hassan deliberately lets Amir win, Amir looks forward to win the tournament and make Baba proud of him.
